Tired of your players exploring yet another ’empty, ruined building’? We’ve all been there. It’s time to inject some unforgettable flavour into your post-apocalyptic, cyberpunk, or urban fantasy campaigns!

This Urban Decay Discovery Table is the perfect tool for GMs looking to add unique details, spark new plot hooks, and make every forgotten corner of your world feel alive (or unsettlingly otherwise!). It turns a bland location into a memorable encounter.

The Urban Decay Discovery Table

Ready to transform your locations? The next time your players kick down a door in a derelict building, just roll a d20 and consult the table below. What they find could be a clue, a threat, or something wonderfully strange.

  1. Toxic Bloom Glowing, bioluminescent fungus thrives on chemical run-off, creating an eerie light source but also a deadly hazard.
  2. Echoes of the Past Faded graffiti reveals the desperate slogans of a resistance movement, offering a clue to a forgotten conflict.
  3. Structural Anomaly The building is tilted at a bizarre angle, defying gravity and potentially unstable.
  4. Automated Defence A jury-rigged automated turret, perhaps utilizing discarded tech, continues to target perceived threats.
  5. Data Cache A waterlogged computer terminal holds corrupted files detailing pre-collapse research. Requires skill check to salvage.
  6. Parasitic Growth Mutated vines have overtaken the structure, animating debris into plant-controlled pseudo-creatures.
  7. Gravity Anomaly An area within the ruin where gravity is weakened or inverted.
  8. Temporal Echo Sounds or sights from the past briefly manifest.
  9. Sentient Mould A colony of intelligent mould communicates via patterns on the wall, possessing limited knowledge and an alien morality.
  10. Corpse Garden Bodies are arranged in a ritualistic manner, adorned with scavenged items.
  11. Infestation Swarms of mutated insects nest within the structure.
  12. Fungal Network Mycelial network connecting the building to other locations, providing passages for creatures or resources.
  13. Collapsed Reality The edge of a room shows another place, perhaps a forest or an ocean.
  14. Anti-Tech Field Technology malfunctions or ceases to function within this location.
  15. Psychic Resonance Strong emotions linger, potentially influencing those present.
  16. Mimic Object An item in the environment is actually a creature disguised as an inanimate object.
  17. Dimensional Tear A shimmering portal leads to an unknown location. Roll 1d6: 1-2 = hostile environment, 3-4 = abandoned area, 5-6 = inhabited location.
  18. Chronal Distortion Time flows differently in this area, causing rapid ageing or de-ageing.
  19. Weapon Cache A hidden stash of usable, if aged, weaponry.
  20. Bio-luminescent Organisms Strange flora or fauna emit a soft, otherworldly light, altering perceptions.

Bring Your Discoveries to Life

Don’t just stop at the roll! This table is a springboard for your creativity. Did you roll ‘Echoes of the Past’? Awesome! Who was the resistance group mentioned in the graffiti? What were they fighting for? Suddenly, a simple piece of scenery becomes a deep lore drop for your world building.

A ‘Data Cache’ could hold the key to a corporate conspiracy, and a ‘Temporal Echo’ might reveal a vital clue to a mystery. Use these results to create instant adventure hooks and side quests on the fly.

Create Unforgettable Ruins

With a single roll, you can turn a generic location into the most memorable part of the session. Use this table to build richer environments, surprise your players, and create wonderful stories in the ruins of your TTRPG world. Happy gaming!
